On March 22,
a horrifying assault shook Moscow as terrorists stormed a packed concert hall,
unleashing gunfire on the unsuspecting crowd. The brutal attack claimed the
lives of more than 60 people and left over 100 others wounded, some critically.
Adding to the chaos, the assailants set the venue ablaze, exacerbating the
tragedy. This atrocity follows closely on the heels of Russian President
Vladimir Putin's reelection, where he secured his fifth term with a landslide
victory, garnering 87% of the vote.
The targeted
concert was featuring the Russian rock band Picnic and took place at Crocus
City Hall, a substantial venue on the outskirts of Moscow capable of
accommodating 6,200 attendees. The Investigative Committee, Russia's primary
criminal investigation authority, revealed early on Saturday that the death
toll had surpassed 60, while health authorities compiled a list of 145 injured
individuals. Among the wounded, 115 required hospitalization, including five
children.
How did the deadly assault at Crocus
City Hall coincide with Russia's conflict in Ukraine, termed an "immense
tragedy"?
On Friday
night, in Moscow's western outskirts, a group of at least five gunmen, armed
with automatic weapons and dressed in camouflage, stormed the crowded Crocus
City Hall during a performance by the veteran rock band Picnic. They fired
indiscriminately into the audience and set off explosives, causing a massive
fire that engulfed the concert hall and led to its roof collapsing. This tragic
attack, described by Moscow's Mayor Sergei Sobyanin as an "immense
tragedy," is one of the deadliest incidents in recent Russian history and
occurs amid Russia's conflict in Ukraine, now in its third year.
Was the Islamic State (ISIS-Khorasan)
responsible for the recent attack on the outskirts of Moscow as claimed through
social media?
Additionally,
reports highlighted multiple incidents involving the Islamic State in Russia
that month, including the reported killing of six alleged members in
Ingushetia. Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) disclosed thwarting an ISIL
attack by ISKP targeting a Moscow synagogue on March 7.
Following
the FSB's announcement, the US embassy in Moscow issued a warning of an
imminent attack in the city. A US official later confirmed intelligence
supporting ISIL's claim of responsibility for the assault on Crocus City Hall.
How did the world leaders react to the Moscow
terror attack?
World
leaders responded with condemnation to the Moscow terror attack. UN
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed shock and condemned it strongly,
while the UN Security Council labeled it a "heinous and cowardly terrorist
attack." French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the attack and
expressed solidarity with the victims and Russia. Indian Prime Minister
Narendra Modi denounced it as terrorism and pledged solidarity with Russia.
Spain and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also expressed shock and
solidarity with the victims and their families in Moscow.
Which terrorist organisation was
behind the Moscow bombing?
The
terrorist organization known as ISIS-K, originating from the historical term
for the Khorasan region spanning parts of Iran, Turkmenistan, and Afghanistan,
emerged in eastern Afghanistan in late 2014, rapidly gaining notoriety for its
extreme brutality.
Despite being one of the most active regional affiliates of the Islamic State militant group, ISIS-K has experienced a decline in membership since its peak around 2018. Media reports suggest that heavy losses inflicted by both US forces and the Taliban in the region have contributed significantly to this decline.
In a notable
incident earlier this year, the US intercepted communications confirming
ISIS-K's involvement in twin bombings in Iran, resulting in the deaths of
nearly 100 people.
In September
2022, ISIS-K militants claimed responsibility for a deadly suicide bombing at
the Russian embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan. Additionally, the group was
responsible for an attack on Kabul’s international airport in 2021, resulting
in the deaths of 13 US troops and numerous civilians during the chaotic US
evacuation from the country.
Before
ISIS-K claimed responsibility for the Crocus City Hall attack, Russia had
issued a threat to Ukraine, stating that it would find and eliminate Ukraine’s
top officials if they were linked to the gun attack outside Moscow.
